Memphis

In 1981, a group of Italian designers led by Ettore Sottsass got bored of minimalism and decided furniture should have a sense of humor. Memphis was loud on purpose: cheap materials, clashing color, shapes picked for how they felt rather than how they resolved. It didn't last long as a formal movement, but it changed what a generation of designers thought pattern was allowed to do.
